Would we recommend the Biltmore Estate for your next vacation?

The Biltmore Estate is one of America's castles.  It is America's largest home, it was a technological marvel of its time and it's a worthy travel destination.  Another plus for the Biltmore Estate is the many other things to do in the beautiful Asheville, NC area.

But we felt that the tour was a poor value. Only sixty of the two hundred and fifty rooms are included in the tour.  The basic price for entry is quite pricey and includes very little information about the Estate unless you pay more for an MP3 player, or even more than that for a guided tour.  There is a hefty security presence in the home but no tour guides.

Our visit was very unpleasant, partially due to the fact that we committed the dastardly deed of trying to shoot one of the rooms for our vacation video. When we tried to get our money back, we were refused, even though we hadn't yet taken the tour.

Instead of really having a good time and enjoying that particular day of our vacation, we left the Biltmore Estate feeling somewhat used, disgusted and nauseated at the huge, huge waste of money that was spent on this profoundly extravagent home.

But that’s just my opinion. Your experience may be completely different.
