Work easier. Be Organized.
By Stella Saragos
When you work at home it is very important to be organized. Being un-organized can make you hate your work at home job and your whole work at home lifestyle, in addition to causing you to waste valuable time. It may even jeopardize your work at home job.
It's easy to make sure your work at home career is as enjoyable and productive as it can possibly be. One of the keys is organization. Whether or not you're organized when you work at home can have a huge impact on how much you enjoy your work, how secure your work at home job may be, and even how much money you can make! Working at home may become a monkey on your back if you are not properly organized.
- Organize your time. Set specific times that you intend to work at home and specific times that you intend to do other things, and stick to your schedule. Not organizing your time can lead to very uncomfortable chaos for both you and your family and may ultimately lead to the end of your work at home lifestyle.
- Organize your work space. A well organized work space can save you valuable time and make your work at home job far more enjoyable. Who wants to spend all of their time hunting down papers or suffering the consequences of lost information? And just because you work at home doesn't mean you want to waste your valuable time. Valuable time organizing yourself and your work early in the process will go a long way toward making it easy for you to stay organized all along the way. If you work at home and no longer have an employer to do your organizing for you, take the time necessary to buy your own filing cabinets, files, labels, drawer space, baskets, notebooks... whatever is necessary to keep you organized in your work at home job.
- If you're starting a work at home business, be sure your home based business is structured in a way that suits your company and needs. Will your home based business be a sole proprietorship? A corporation? A partnership or LLC? Discuss the appropriate structure for your home based business with an attorney who specializes in business law. Ask your attorney which structure will give you the most protection in today's ridiculous and viciously sue-crazy society so that your home based business and everything you work for doesn't end up being lost in a lawsuit. The type of structure for your home based business will also have a large impact on how much tax you and your home based business will have to pay, so this is a decision you should make carefully.
- Be sure that your work at home environment is pleasant and makes you feel good when you're in it. You will enjoy your work every day if, in addition to being well organized, your work space is pleasant to work in. Select colors, furniture, accessories and tools that help you enjoy your work at home responsibilities.
- Time management rules apply to when you work at home, too! Touch each paper only once. After that it gets distributed to someone else, acted on by you, filed where it should go or thrown away. Don't procrastinate. Do the most stressful tasks first so they're out of the way.
