How Working at Home
Works For Me

by Barbara A Kinnion

Working from home is better than I could have ever imagined. The main reason I wanted to work from home was to have more time with my children but I’ve gotten so much more out of the deal.

My new job is fun and very flexible. I’ve been able to pursue other interests. And the freedom I feel is unbelievable.

Since I started working from home, I can see a difference in the amount of time I get to spend with my children. Because I don’t have to get ready for work myself, I get to calmly help my children get ready for their day. The time we spend together is less stressful and much more meaningful. I get to drop my children off and pick them up from school. It has always meant a lot to me as a mom to be able to see my children go into the school building and come out as well.

When they’re home, even when I’m working, I get to spend my breaks and lunches with them. It’s so refreshing to be able to go from my office into the den and hang out with my kids as opposed to talking on the phone to them or having lunch with co-workers I may have not been very fond of.

I get to participate in more school functions and help out in the classroom when needed. Working from home has helped me realize my desire to be a better mom.

When I first started working from home, I worked for Teletech which was pretty nice but the schedule was not flexible so that didn’t work for me. The company I work for now, West Corporation, allows lots of flexibility. I get to choose the days and hours I want to work. I still have technical support if I need it so I never feel like I’m alone while I’m working. I also have access to a supervisor, even though I don’t have anyone looking over my shoulder.

Another advantage to working from home is that I get to work at night while my children are asleep. When I worked at night outside my home, it was very difficult for me to leave my children so this has worked out perfectly for me. I also don’t have to worry about driving back and forth to work so as soon as I get off work, I jump into bed. I really like that part. It’s a lot less stressful than any job I’ve ever had.

Being able to work from my own home has also given more meaning to my life and allowed me to help others by enabling me to pursue other interests that I would not have been able to had I been working outside of my home. One day while I was at the clinic, I noticed a flyer about becoming a breastfeeding mentor. I could not believe my eyes. I breastfed all five of my children and believe greatly in the benefits of breastfeeding. Whenever I have access to information that I think will be beneficial to others, I do my best to spread the word so this was the perfect opportunity for me. I called to set up and interview (which went very well by the way) and now I’m just waiting for training to start so I can share what I know and have learned with expectant and new mothers. I’m really looking forward to this new experience.

I first wanted to work from home over eighteen years ago and it’s taken me most of that time to make it happen. With today’s technology, that doesn’t have to happen to you.

Make your own dream to work from home come true.
