Telecommuting jobs are jobs in which you work at home and use such telecommuting job tools as the internet, phone lines and fax machines to communicate with other people that you need to work with.  Some telecommuting jobs require that you spend some face time in the office; in some cases for specific meetings or a specifica day of the week. Other telecommuting jobs require absolutely no time in the office.  Some people who have telecommuting jobs have never seen their employer face to face!

Some types of jobs are suitable to be telecommuting jobs and some are not.  For example, the receptionist at an office building, or the mail courier, obviously could not convert their office job to a telecommuting job. But the administrative assistants, researchers, writers, editors, analysts, system administrators, marketing coordinators, web designers, graphic artists, actuaries and many other types of jobs may be fully able to convert their jobs into great telecommuting jobs.

Some telecommuting jobs may involve travel or some time outside the home meeting customers, buying supplies or some other activity, but other telecommuting jobs will require absolutely no time outside the home.

Beside the location, telecommuting jobs generally offer far more flexibility concerning the hours one works. Whereas your traditional office job forces you to work specific hours, telecommuting jobs may offer the ability to work different hours. Generally speaking, the more frequently your telecommuting job requires that you communicate with clients or other people at your company, the more likely it will be that you will still be forced to work similiar hours, but from the comfort of your own home and still with somewhat more flexibility within the daytime hours.

Basic equipment for people who have telecommuting jobs includes: at least one telephone line, internet access, email, basic knowledge of common software programs (such as Microsoft Office), a fax machine, and a well-organized, quiet place to work that is free of background noise if your telecommuting job involves talking on the phone.
